The Workshop

Practical Information and Fees 2010

Location

Johannesburg, South Africa

Duration

July 18-28, 2009, with a bus tour of the city and an opening dinner on July 18.

Eligibility

Professors and advanced graduate students in the humanities, social sciences, and critical legal and science studies, are invited to apply. Public intellectuals, artists and writers with a strong commitment to theory are also invited to apply.

All applicants should be able to communicate in English.

Openings

There are openings for approximately 36 participants. Competition is keen, and applicants will be asked to motivate their application.

Curriculum

The intellectual programme will consist of a series of long lectures, roundtable discussions,  debates and public events.  Many of these intellectual events will include experiences of urban Johannesburg.

Tuition

Tuition fees have been broken down into sliding scale categories in order to ensure a financial scheme that accommodates global resource inequities.

No profit is made on this event. All fees have been calculated to cover only the cost of the event.


Tuition Categories

Category 1

US$2200 for university professors from the North.
(approximately 12 positions available)

Category 2

US$1700 for advanced graduate students from the North
(approximately 11 positions available)

Tuition for Category 1&2 includes accommodation, airport transfer in South Africa, daily transport in South Africa, breakfast, lunch and some dinners, and entrance fees for evening cultural events. It does NOT include airfare. It is assumed that professors and graduate students from the North have access to funding resources within their home institutions. We are happy to assist with letters of invitation which suit particular institutional funding requirements.

Category 3

R 10000 (US$ 1400) for professors and advanced graduate students from the South (non-subsidized)
(Since this category does not depend on subsidy, numbers will be decided on the basis of total number of applications)

Tuition includes accommodation, airport transfer in South Africa, daily transport in South Africa, breakfast, lunch and some dinners and entrance fees for evening cultural events. It does NOT include airfare. It is assumed that applicants have access to funding resources within their home institutions.

Category 4

R 2000 (US$ 250) for professors and advanced graduate students from the South (subsidized)
(approximately 5 positions available)

Tuition includes accommodation, airport transfer in South Africa, daily transport in South Africa, breakfast, lunch and some dinners and entrance fees for evening cultural events. It does NOT include airfare. It is assumed that applicants have little or no access to funding resources within their home institutions.

Category 5

R 1000 - R3000 (depending on income) for professors and advanced graduate students from South Africa.
(approximately 7 positions available)

Tuition includes lunch, some dinners and entrance fees for evening cultural events. It does NOT include airfare, accommodation and local transport. It is assumed that accommodation and transport will be arranged privately.

If you fall into categories 4 or 5, please include in your letter of application a motivation for your inclusion in these financial categories (including current employment position, funding situation of your home institution and, if necessary, income).



Tuition Deposit

To hold a place in the Workshop, prospective participants must submit the following non-refundable deposit before April 30, 2010. The remainder of tuition is due on June 1.

Category 1&2: US$ 500

Category 3: US$ 400

Category 4: US$ 100

Category 5: R 500



Food and Accommodation

All participants whose tuition includes accommodation will be accommodated in comfortable B&Bs in the lively Johannesburg suburb of Melville. Lunch and some dinners will be provided either at Wits University (the venue for the Workshop) or in various restaurants and venues around the city.  Participants will be transported daily between Melville and Wits University, and to various alternative venues the Workshop will be using for its events.

Tuition fees cover accommodation costs from the night of the 17 July up to and including the night of the 27 July. Any extra nights are for the participant's own account. We would be happy to assist with arranging bookings for additional stay.

Acceptances and Deposits

Applications should be sent to the Workshop no later than March 31, 2010. Applications for admission will be evaluated beginning April 1.

Decisions on admission will be announced on April 10, 2010. Selection of participants will be made by a nominated selection panel.

Applicants who have been admitted will have to submit their deposit before April 30. The remainder of the tuition is due on June 1.
